How to find the perfect pattern cutter for your brand

Industry insiders will tell you that a good pattern cutter is a rare gem. He or she will support your brand and translate your ideas effectively. Finding one who suits your brand and goals can be a challenge, but it isn't impossible. You just need to know what to look for.

We've been in the fashion business for over twenty years, and these are our top tips for finding the perfect pattern cutter.

Choose a pattern cutter who is a pro in your garment group

Pattern cutters have areas of expertise. Some specialise in childrenswear, others in outdoor clothing and gear, others in occasion wear, and so on. Each garment group needs its own equipment, sewing and cutting techniques, and each has its own challenges and pitfalls.

Partnering with someone who knows the ins and outs of your garment group is the best way to set your brand up for success, and it can minimise problems during production. Many brands use one pattern cutter for their entire collection, but this can lead to unforeseen expenses and lower-quality products.

If you're using a product development company like ours, be specific about your collection so you can be matched with the right cutter. Study the company's website and look at their previous work to see whether they have experience in your range of garments. If you'd rather work with a freelance pattern cutter, you may need two or more, depending on your design range.

Choose a pattern cutter according to your production goals

Pattern cutters can be creative, or geared purely towards production patterns. They have different approaches, such as flat pattern cutting, draping or a mix of both, and they might work by hand or use CAD software. Decide which of these will best support your brand, and look for a pattern cutter with the resources and expertise to match.

If you're planning a range of hoodies and t-shirts with bold prints, made in a factory abroad, a pattern cutter who creates digital patterns may suit you best, because digital patterns are easy to send to a factory. If perfect fit is your brand's strength, look for someone with experience of internal structure and draping.

Know what your production goals are, and pick a pattern cutter who can support you on that journey.

Do your research

There's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to pattern cutters, and someone who worked well for another designer might not be right for you. Do your own research based on your needs, rather than relying only on reviews or word of mouth.

Try to meet your prospective pattern cutter at their studio, or have a video call. Talking face to face about goals, values and branding lets you judge whether they're right for you, and it's the start of a working relationship. Three more tips on choosing a pattern cutter

1. Work with a pattern cutter you can see in person. It makes fittings and communication easier. Don't be tempted by lower prices overseas, especially the first time, as it can turn into a steep and expensive learning curve.

2. Further down the line you'll need tech packs and measurement charts for production. Not every pattern cutter provides these, so check whether they offer this support or whether you'll need to find help elsewhere.

3. Most pattern cutters give a rough estimate, and charges can change depending on how the process goes. Unlike many studios, we offer set prices and packages, which you can see on our How we work & pricing page. But price shouldn't be your only consideration. Look for someone who offers real value, support and encouragement as your brand grows.
